Thing #94: Express Card
For my first job out of college, I needed some nicer things to wear. So, I bought a couple shirts, a couple ties, and a pair of pants (and maybe a belt?) from Express right before my first day.
I was a relatively poor post-college guy at that point, so when they offered a big discount on the purchase to open a store credit account, I said "sure!" (or "okay", or whatever).
Fast forward seven years: I've still only made the one purchase, which was promptly paid off after my first paycheck. This account has been freeloading on my credit report ever since, so when rediscovered the actual card, I figured I might as well retire it. (As you may have noticed from the photo, the card still has a sticker on it, reminding me to activate it by phone; I'm assuming I never did so.)
I also had the Card Agreement, so I flipped through that and noted the section on cancelling an account. I'm sure I could do that over the phone, too, but since I did that last time, I thought I'd follow the formal instructions instead: I cut the card in half and put each half in an envelope with a letter indicating that I wanted to cancel my account. Then, I mailed it to the customer service address.
I'm not sure how long this will take, or whether I'll hear anything back, or whether it'll even work. But I had fun putting it in the mail, so to me it's worth the wait to find out!
