Three hundred sixty-three divided by two is one hundred eighty-one and a half, which means that...
...we've just passed the halfway point!
*confetti*
*balloons*
*streamers*
Livin' On A Prayer
*party hats*
*cake*
*fun*
That was amazing, now let's get back to work.

On Progress and Motivation
Progress: too slow
Motivation: too little
When I originally came up with this "LEVEL UP" idea, I was attempting to motivate myself through a form of gamification.
This hasn't been working so well, because I (just now!) realized that the inherent "reward" of reaching the next level doesn't actually motivate me; it's just a way of measuring progress in fractions. Well, it turns out I need motivation if I'm going to speed up.
I've decided to attach rewards to each of the next milestones. Of course, it would defeat the purpose to just buy something new when the whole point is to reduce the amount of things I have, but the obvious answer to that is: upgrade. If I replace some thing I have with a better/newer/cooler version of that thing, it's a neutral-count upgrade, but I get something new, too, which is (hopefully!) rewarding.
It feels a little weird to share with the world what luxuries I'm planning to buy myself, but hey, admitting your embarrassing lack of progress is part of the deal when you share your project with the world, so let's see if this helps fix it. Here's a first draft of a progress chart that I'll use in future posts once I've decided what to use as actual rewards.

Shout Out to a Sister Blog
Since a lot of my traffic is coming from her blog, I should finally mention Trista's 7 Items A Week.
If that sounds like almost exactly what I'm doing, that's because we had similar ideas and each decided to start on them this year.
Her writing is amusing and concise. And there are photographs, too. Go check it out already!

Dead Rock Stars Made Me Do It
A few days ago I had things one and two ready to be disposed of. But I wasn't sure if I really wanted to make this a whole year-long endeavor, or whether I really wanted to try to keep up a blog throughout. Between the door and the car I was talking myself into just doing a little clean-up and forgetting the whole large-scale version of the adventure.
When I started the car, the radio was on. Specifically, Lynyrd Skynyrd was on, singing Simple Man. I figured that was a good sign from the universe that I should go ahead with the plan. And so I did.
True story.

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son
Is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh won't you do this for me son
If you can
True story.
